Stable through the Night

Miss Elliott on ECMO day 1

Brian and I checked up on Elli during the night, and she was staying pretty much the same, still having issues with low blood pressures, it seems that she really likes a high volume of blood runing through the ECMO machine, so they did end up giving her another unit of platelets, a unit of blood and a bolus of Albumin to keep her blood pressure in the acceptable range. She is still having blood pressure issues this morning, but not as bad as yesterday when we were here.

Yesterday the doctors decided to reduce Elli's sedation medications because she was pretty limp, they decreased both her Morphine and Versed drips down to 30 from 50, and we really noticed it this morning when we got here. She even had her eyes peeked open just a little bit and was able to give our fingers a little squeeze. The doctors have not yet made rounds, but we are anxious to hear if they have any new ideas of why Elli's blood pressures continue to remain on the lower end.

We are attempting to figure out how all of this NICU business works, Brian continues to call me a chicken because I get too nervous to ask some questions, like if we can use a laptop, but I finally did, and they said it was fine, so we will be doing a better job of keeping the blog page up to date, the last 48 hours have been so hectic it was hard to find the time to think let alone type on the blog page. I am hoping that I can get some good pictures today when the lights are on, because she is just so darn cute I can hardly resist. Thanks for all the comments, prayers, and words of encrouragment, we are hanging in there, and so is Elli!

One day and one moment at a time. Sounds like things are going okay. We are praying for all three of you to have strength, patience and understanding. Praying for the doctors and nurses to have wisdom, compassion and respect.

God Bless,

I am glad she is stable now.

I too seemed apprehensive to initially ask a lot of questions. I think for a while you feel like your child belongs to the NICU and not you. I quickly realized however that Livi was my baby and any question I wanted to ask was going to be asked. I may have gotten a little annoying but it was worth it to make sure I was on top of all of her care and she and I were both comfortable.

I can't wait to see more pictures. She is such a beauty. She looks like she weighs more than 6.8, so round and cute.

Keeping you in my thoughts.

I am so glad that she has picked up a bit since we saw you two last night. I have been thinking about her constantly.

Don't be afraid to ask any questions. That's your little angel and you deserve the right to ask. And don't let B give you any tussle. I have enough dirt on him... he has no right to tease you. :)

Again, let us know if you need anything. We'd be more than happy to do anything we can.

Love you!
-Jenny

P.S. Daddy said last night to tell you that if there was anything he could do from his side of the 'Ville, to let him know.

Don't be afraid to ask questions!! :) One of the best things you can do is utilize all the things you have available (such as wireless service). We could have our phones in the NICU and talk, but couldn't make outgoing calls from the NICU (people could call us and we could answer). They gave meal vouchers for moms who were pumping--even if I just ran down to the cafeteria to grab and orange juice and an apple, it was something.

I know it is a little different with her on ECMO, but don't be afraid to do whatever you can with her (read to her, touch her). Even though she is in the NICU, you are still the parents. :) When the time comes ask about holding, giving baths, changing diapers--everything you would do for a "typical" baby. Being assertive and asking for what you want takes some getting used to, but you will learn what Elli likes and needs.

Hang in there, you are doing an awesome job! Hope they are able to figure out her pressure issues.
