Surgery Update #2

Just thought that I would give everyone some more details on how the surgery went. As you can tell, Elli has a silo. It is pretty overwhelming to see at first, so we will post some pictures of that at a later date. Elli didn't have too much bleeding and is actually doing very well and has stabilized out, hopefully for the rest of the night. Her blood gases looked a little on the acidic side so they are giving her a normal saline bolus now, but her hemoglobin and hematacrit are looking good so far indicating that she is not actively bleeding anywhere. Her two drains, one in her left chest and one in her abdomen, are draining some blood but not too much so far. As far as lung tissue goes, unfortunately Elli basically has no left lung. The lung tissue that is there is very, very small also called a "nubbin" by the surgeon. So basically all oxygenation will have to be done by the right lung, which by the most recent chest x-ray after surgery, looks pretty good. Dr A. actually is very pleased with the size and said that in some cases, the right lung will grow to try to compensate for the lack of left lung. I guess this is the silver lining in this whole ordeal. The true test of it's functionability will be when the doctors start to wean her off the ECMO machine (24-48 hours from now) as long as Elli doesn't develop any bleeding issues. So basically we are back to the waiting game. As for right now Elli looks very stable, her blood pressure looks great as do the rest of her vital signs. The nurses are going to draw blood gases again at 1 to make sure that it was a fluid issue and not an oxygenation issue. So as of right she is stable and doing as well if not better than expected. Will post how she is doing in the morning. Thank you all so much for the continued support, just knowing that everyone was thinking of Elli and us was awesome. All the comments really made us feel so blessed that we have such a strong support system. Thanks again Brian, Cassi and Elli

Thank you for keeping us updated!!! I am so happy that you all are over this hump--the surgery is done!!! Yay! I'm praying for the left nubbin (lung bud) to really blossom--and for the right lung to step up! The human body is amazing--you'll be shocked when you see the xrays in a few days how much the lung(s) can expand now that they have room.Way to go Elli--such a strong little girl!!! We'll be praying for her to remain stable so we can say goodbye to the ECMO machine.
Many prayers coming to you from Birmingham, AL! Par sends Elli a high-five!

Been thinking about you and praying all day, but didn't get a chance to check the news until tonight. We are so glad to hear she has done as well as she has.

Just keep taking one minute at a time. Everyone is precious. We all need to be reminded of that.

What a great update and what an amazing little girl Elli is!
My son's CDH was not nearly as severe but his left lung (his CDH was right-sided) did grow larger than normal to compensate for the smaller right lung. When he was x-rayed at 15 months his right lung had caught up and was normal in size (not necessarily in function). His right lung was 2/3 normal size at birth, so it wasn't considered a bud. The human body is an amazing thing and these babies are such fighters and I can see that Ellie is definitely a fighter!
Still praying!!

What a tough girl! Keep it up Elli and continue to amaze everyone! I am still holding out hope for her left lung. My son Jack had the same thing. At surgery they said he had only a bud and they couldn't inflate it. Miraculously it ballooned out and opened within about 1 week after his repair. I pray that Elli has the same miracle!
Best of luck and prayers are coming!

Hi Cassi and Brian,

I am happy for the relatively good news regarding Elli's surgical outcome. Of course, she and her parents are in my prayers. I appreciate all the updating you do, it's the talk of the hospital. Everyone is wanting to know how Elli is doing. She has shown how strong and resilient she is, who knows just what she is capable of overcoming. She is beautiful.
God bless you both.

Love to your family!

I pray God's mercy and grace on baby Elli's life. I also pray that God will continue to keep and bless her parents as well. You both will be blessed for sharing with others such a personal and intimate moment in your lives. This is why God's sends us through challenges in life for us to trust him and for us to tell others about the goodness of the Lord for him to get the glory. I personally thank you myself because I will giving birth to my CDH baby girl, Zion Reign on Sept. 25th. Thank you for helping me to prepare for the unimaginable and what's to come. I never knew such a birth defect even exsisted after having two healthy children. Keep the faith even when it seems the worse and Elli will prevail. Remember God has the last say so!

God bless you!

I know it's not the same situation, but I wanted to share some hope with you. My Dad is a lung cancer survivor and he had to have an entire lung removed due to the cancer and his remaining lung was very damaged from a lifetime of smoking. Now, 3 years later, the one damaged lung is supporting a 300 pound grown man with no additional oxygen support. He did go through extensive respiratory therapy and was on oxygen for a while, but now he's like normal. If this can happen to him, it can happen for Baby Elli! Keep up the hope! We're still checking in daily so thank you for taking the time to update.
