Day 19

Elli had her ups and downs again today. The doctors are still very concerned that Elli is not showing any progress even with all the medication changes they have tried. Her pulmonary hypertension is still incredibly high, and they have not been able to wean the vent settings at all, even when this morning her gases looked great and her saturations were in the 90's. It seems like that any little adjustment the doctors try to make, Elli does not respond well to it. Still trying to sort out if there are any other medications to put her on that will help with the pulmonary hypertension, but since she is not eating it is limiting. Some meds that might help can only be given via the gut and since she has not eaten, that wouldn't really work. So now we are left to wait, not knowing if Elli will start responding to any of the interventions that the doctors throw at her. Tomorrow the Neonatology team is going to have a conference about Elli to see if anyone has any new ideas to help with the pulmonary hypertension. As of now, the HFOV seems to be doing more damage to Elli's lungs than good. They need to wean her off of it, but they can't without causing an increase in her hypertension. The doctors are trying some heavier sedation medications and have even toyed with the idea of temporarily paralysing her. Sorry this post is so late, Brian and I are at a loss for words.

So sorry to hear that your family has been processing a lot of bad news today. We will be praying for a turnaround for Elli tonight. In particular we will pray for the doctors to figure out a way to get that hypertension under control.

Just remember, like with all rollercoasters, the CDH rollercoaster can make a turn upwards when you least expect it.

I am at a lost for words too. My heart goes out to you both. I know how difficult life in the NICU can be and the crazy CDH roller coaster ride seems like the ride will never come to a stand still.

Just remember that Elli has people all over the world praying for her. She is a strong girl,a true warrior princess!

Always in my thoughts and prayers

I know that the information you have been receiving is not what you want to hear. Please know that there is hope. Kaden was a VERY sick baby. He was on ECMO, did good so he came off. After that he got very sick again and they waited weeks before they could do his repair surgery. He was on the vent so long that they dianoised him with chronic lung disease. They were also very worried about his hypertension. After being in the hospital for as long as he was they sent him home as "one of the sickest babies" they have ever sent home. They told us that they didn't believe he would live much past his first birthday. He is now four and his lungs, we are told, so GREAT!!! Although he requires a trach and right now a vent, he is a very smart, loving, active four year old. They told us that he would never walk and he is now walking on his own. Keep believing and praying. The doctors are not always right. Kaden was a very challenging case, every doctor that had him remembers him...if you want ask them what they did for him, maybe they did something different that might work for Elli (I honestly can not remember what all they did). I know that every baby is different but reading your blog reminds me a lot of Kaden. They will find an answer or Elli will prove them wrong without one. I know that this is the hardest thing that you have probably ever had to deal with...you guys are doing an amazing job. It is alright to be lost, confused, upset, anybody would be in your situation. Just keep loving her and letting her know that you are there. Remember to be there for each other as well. You are each other's shoulder to lean on, to cry on. Keep posting, as I think it is really helpful to get it out as well.

Praying for you three.

I'm not even sure what to say. Elli has come to hold a special place in my heart. I hope and pray that things can turn around with her PH in a short amount of time to get her off of the HFV.

Elli is a warrior, as someone else mentioned and she feels your love and strength each and every day.

You are all in my constant thoughts.

I put both of you, Elli, and her health team on my prayer list at church this morning, so I know there will be so many more people praying. God is listening.

Take care and I'll look for your post tomorrow.

She is absolutely beautiful. :) It sounds like she is such a little fighter and I know that the nurses and doctors will work so hard to help her improve- the ECMO nurses and doctors there are the best. :) You guys are continually in our thoughts... hang in there...Love to you all.

Brian and Cassi,

I just heard the news and I am so heartbroken. I can't even begin to understand how you are both feeling. May God walk even closer to you through this part of your journey. At least Heaven is sweeter today with a beautiful new angel. My prayers will continue to be with you. God Bless you all and sweet little Elli.

Don't give up hope! As long as there is fight left in your little girl, don't give up hope! Fight with her, no matter how hard and how draining it is...fight. I understand the emotional ups and downs with everything we have been through and it's tough to keep your spirits up. Lean on the fact that there are lots of prayers going out for your little girl, so it's ok if you don't have the strength to pray yourselves. We will be attending our grief support group on Tuesday night. We will try to find you to give you a much needed hug. Stay strong.

You have to believe in the power of prayer and know that you have so many people praying not only for precious Elli but also for her marvelous parents. Trust in the Lord to give the doctors the knowledge required to find the "right" answer that will help Elli. Elli knows when you are there and can feel the love pouring out to her.

Praying harder than ever!
